Introduction

Looking after one’s skin is important. Over the years, various forms of methods and techniques have been introduced in order to make sure that ones’ skin remains perfect. From natural to more technological methods, the process of making sure that ones’ skin remains healthy has never gone out of fashion. One such way is the growing use of the chemical peel method.

What is it?

A chemical peel is a treatment that is used to improve the appearance of the skin. It is a part of a cosmetic treatment which can be applied to the face, neck, and hands. They are used to improve the appearance of the skin. Chemical peels are a much more natural way of rejuvenating the skin. They are not painful compared to lasers and have been becoming more popular because of this. Although, this method is ancient, scientific and technological improvements have revolutionized the way it works. As a result, this method has been growing momentum.

How it is performed?

Chemical peel’s essential aim is to improve the skin’s appearance using chemicals. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which makes it blister. Once the skins become blister, it eventually peels off. After this, new skin grows in its place. The new skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled compared to the older one. The new skin, however, is more sensitive to the sun which means that it is to be taken cared of. These days the chemical peel can be applied to so many different formulations. There is not a single type or way to get a chemical peel. The formulations can be done at home through weaker glycolic peels to the more serious and stronger peels that are done through more technical ways. Initially, there are three main kinds or ways to get a chemical peel. These include; the mild peels, medium peel or the deep peel. The method depends upon the severity or the deepness of the peel. The depth of these peel depends upon the chemicals applied, where the concentration of these chemicals lies, the skin type and the conditions of the skin.

In the mild peel, mild acid such as Alpha-hydroxy, Glycolic Acid or Citric Acid is used. In this method, only the outer layer of the skin is penetrated. The treatment is initially used to improve the appearance of the skin. It is used to refresh the face, neck, chest or hands. The use of Citric Acid and lower acids are used to improve the acne scars, skin tone and texture of the skin. It also diminishes the wrinkles and reduces the effects of the skin that is damaged by the sun. The ‘No Peel Peel’ treatment is an example of the mild peel. It uses glycolic acid to remove the dead cells from the debris of a person skin.

The medium peel makes use of slightly stronger acids such as trichloroacetic. In this method, the peel is done to penetrate the middle layers of the skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment concentrates on removing age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and freckles. Its aim is to make sure that the skin looks healthier and younger. It is also used to treat some precancerous skin growths. In medium peel, the peel is deeper. It takes two weeks for the skin to peel off.

Lastly, there come the deep chemical peels. These are the strongest chemical peels as they target deep wrinkles, sun damage, and uneven skin tones. This method is initially used to make severe changes to a person skin. It is only used in the face since the skin in the hands, chest and even neck is much lighter and sensitive that they can not resist the pressure of these heavy chemicals. These deep peels can improve the quality of environmentally damaged skin. Trichloroacetic acid or phenol is applied to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment removes moderate lines, age spots, freckles, and shallow scars.

Advantages

There are many benefits of getting a chemical peel. Firstly, it’s much cheaper compared to a laser or any other cosmetic surgical procedures.
